I was on my way home from recording an adventure today when I suddenly realised I wasn't where I thought I was. I had taken the turnoff towards my home down a road that I had thought I had been down once or twice before. I knew it to be a shortcut and a nice sealed surface the whole way. I was driving for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden the bitumen had vanished and had been replaced with a skinny pot-hole riddled dirt track. This had not turned out to be the road I had thought it was or I had missed the turn-off. It had me mildly concerned for a few seconds before I got to a sign post that clearly indicated that this was a "through road" so I knew it had to come out somewhere. Yay, adventure! I have had experience on road trips in Europe where wrong turns have resulted in us ending up in the wrong country, I was certain that this wasn't going to happen in South Purrumbete though. My confusion changed to curiosity when I rounded a corner to see the rolling hills of farmland turn into dense Australian forest. Where the heck was I going? I kept trudging on and on and on until something to be alarmed about popped up. My fuel gauge had dropped to a level I had not yet experimented with so I was unsure as to how far I could continue going. I was in a dilemma. Do I go back, knowing how far I had travelled and that there was a petrol station not far from there, or continue on and risk it. I chose the latter and, unfortunately for this story, in no more than two minutes I was back on a familiar road. Adventure over and petrol station reached. Relax.
My new thing today was a road I never knew was there which took me into some breathtaking bushland. It's amazing what can be discovered when you leave your regular path but you'll never know until you give it a go. Just make sure you have plenty of petrol.
Looking forward to seeing what tomorrow will bring.
P.S. Me getting lost was more exiting than the actual adventure I was meant to be recording. It was still something I had never done before but was very anticlimactic. Maybe a story for another time...
